Citizenship in School: Re conceptualizing Down Syndrome
Author: Christopher Kliewer

When reading this article I automatically thought of Finn. I felt like this article connected to his story because in Finn's story he explained how children were put into classes because of their ability to succeed. Mia's story made me think of the connection on how it is not fair to place students into special classes because of a learning disability or even a physical disability. I felt like it was unfair to Mia when she was unable to get into the classes she wanted to because she had down syndrome. I felt like if she wanted to be in a regular class then she could be able to be put in it. I feel like they are pushing her away front he education she wants. They are treating her different just because she has down syndrome. However, I was glad that Mia took a stand by going back to school and taking "regular" classes.
After reading I felt like the education systems feel as though they can put students in special classes because of their ability and its not fair to the students. This is the same as advanced placement classes, or special education classes. It makes students feel like they are different from other students but in a negative way, because of how they are treated by getting put into a different class. When I was in middle school I remember knowing people that were in "special education" because they had behavioral problems. This is one example that should be is completely unacceptable within the schools. Just because a student had a behavior problem doesn't mean they have a learning disability.
Overall after reading, my conclusion to this reading was that its not fair to exit students from education because they have down syndrome. In actuality people that have down syndrome are very smart they are more alike than different. They speak, write, and talk just like us so I feel like they should not be in separated classes.

Thinking Point: What do you think about the Video Below?

  1. I think the video really solidifies all of the points in the article. Society dehumanizes people with disabilities, especially down syndrome, but in reality they are humans. These videos show that they can still function with the disease, and that they are not the disease themselves.

The story from the article that touched me, was Anne's. She wanted to be a Hollywood director, but her committee decided she should work with preschoolers. They decided, she was not capable of working at a video store, but she was capable to teach youth.

  2. This video sums up the entire article. We seem to think people with disabilities cannot function normally like the rest of us. People who have disabilities are more alike than different, they can do everything you and I can do. I agree with you, it is not fair to exit students from education because they have Down syndrome. They deserve to be in regular classes instead of special education classes. Being put in special education classes makes these students feel stupid and different. I actually bowl with a Down syndrome man and he is the sweetest guy you could ever meet. Sure he might be different, but he is just like everyone else. Great post!

  3. I like how you connected the story of Mia to the article about Finn from last week. I loved the story of Mia I thought it was very inspirational! And you're right it wasn't fair that she got placed in classes she didn't want when she wanted to learn something that she was actually interested in. I am also glad that she went back to school, and got to take the classes that she wanted. I agree with Jess and Ashley also about the video and how it sums up the entire article. Great post Brittani!

  4. I agree Brittani, people with disabilities should have a voice. It is not right to make decisions for people. We all have the right to be happy.

  5. I agree with you that just because they have learning disabilities, they shouldn't be completely separated from everyone else. Having them learn in a regular classroom can help them improve their social and academic skills drastically. People with disabilities are stil people and should be treated equally.
